Insulting the Patriotism of City Dwellers

By howgood1

We all know by now the criticism that Sarah Palin received for suggesting that people in small towns are perhaps more patriotic and more “pro-American” than others (read – big city liberal folks).

John Stewart, likened by the NY Times to Walter Cronkite as the Most Trusted Man in America, perhaps had the most eloquent response when he said, “You know, I just want to say to her, just very quickly: F*** you”.

What has not been revealed were these similar remarks made on the campaign trail about a month ago.

You know, I traveled, obviously, a lot over the last 19 months. And if you go to small towns, throughout the Midwest or the Southwest or the South, every town has tons of young people who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. That’s not always the case in other parts of the country, in more urban centers. And I think it’s important for the president to say, this is an important obligation. If we are going into war, then all of us go, not just some.”

These are the words of Barack Obama, spoken at the ServiceNation Presidential Forum at Columbia University on September 11, 2008 .  Since I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment, perhaps I should vote for him.

Now, does this mean that all those “Not In Our Name” folks would be looked upon unfavorably by an Obama administration or is he saying that he will only send our troops into battle when the polls say it’s OK?

Perhaps Obama could concentrate first on asking his followers to respect people with other points of view.  See what it’s like to walk the Upper West Side with a McCain/Palin sign.  Just as classy as their hero Jon Stewart.
