I just wanted to take the time to say that should Barack Obama become the next President of the United States, that he will be My President and my hope is that other McCain supporters will feel the same way.
The greatness of our democratic instituitons lie in the respect that people have in its outcomes. As an adult, I have chosen to live and raise my family in my native country because I do believe that it is the greatest nation on the face of the earth. My desire to live here and throw my lot in with my fellow Americans is not dependent on who we choose as our leader as others would have it. My love for this country cannot be swayed by ctiricism of it, for this only presents us with an opportunity to defend our differences more proudly, or change for the better where warranted.
Whether we stay in Iraq or leave Iraq, my belief in America will not change.
Whether I pay 3% more or 3% less in taxes, my belief in America will not change.
Whether we allow stem-cell research or not, my belief in America will not change.
Whether we elect an old white man or a young black man, my belief in America will not change.
If I disagree with President Obama’s policies, I will surely let he and other Democratic Partly leaders know as is my right. But I will do it without de-legitimizing their authority, criticizing them personally, or impugning their motives. My promise is to do a better job of calling out those that do and my hope is that others will tell me if I am out of line.
This is the first presidential election when my two daughters will be of age to begin to understand the meaning of democracy, how important their future role will be as citizens, and just how freaking awesome it is that any one of us could be the Presdient of the United States of America. Come January 20, 2009, I will watch with them, my heart overflowing with pride, as we transfer power from one administration to another with a friendly handshake and a simple wish of good luck.
God Bless America, my home sweet home.
