No problem at all. I'm Jewish, so hunting is something you won't find me doing any time soon. Academically, I understand why people hunt, but emotionally and psychologically, I can't understand how people put it on a pedestal as sport much less use it as a way to become closer to God.

I’ll never hunt because it’s against my religion

I was reading your blog and seeing the Chritian references, and then I read that. Do you mind if I ask what religion you are?

And this week one of Obama's advisors said that the fundamentals of the economy are strong in a Meet the Press interview. Not a cinflicting message at all.

No worries. I've been known to misread a fact or ten myself. ;)

And that's an excellent point re: manufacturing and where the $10bn is going.

Good point, I misread it as $10bn per year, not per month. I imagine that much of the money spent on the Iraq war is going to American personnel and manufacturing though, so in a way it's also a way of priming the pump, albeit through the military-industrial complex.

Now, that is inspiring and seems like it makes a lot of sense, right. If I was unskilled and unemployed, I’d want one of those jobs right now! Except that $10 billion divided by 2 million is about $5,000 per job. And that doesn’t include materials for all those roads and bridges.

Two things.

1) What Obama is proposing is something economists usually refer to as "priming the pump', and it's been a highly effective method of encouraging private investment in public works projects since Lincoln used public funds to start the transcontinental railroad. State governments who initiate public works projects to repair and establish infrastructure typically do so by releasing small amounts of public funds and encouraging the private sector to invest heavily. Jobs are created, money flows and the newly employed spend their paychecks at businesses, supporting the economy.

Priming the pump is a form of trickle down economics. It's a proven method which has worked as an economic stimulus, time and time again for 150 years. It's also a lot more proactive than the tax cuts McCain is proposing for businesses. Giving businesses incentives to choose to do the right thing for America hasn't exactly served us well recently.

2) Individuals who work for Public Works projects will not make $5K a month. But if they did that's $60,000 a year. Worth pointing out that such a salary is far more than they'd make on unemployment, which totals less than $10K for the maximum 26 weeks allowed.

Sounds like an improvement over the current system to me.
